Hotdog-Buns


Last weekend also here in Cologne the weather startet to be hot and sunny. We were really delighted because for sunday we invited some friends for a nice picnic.

 

We decided not to do it on our own balcony and started really early to take all necessary things with us to do it in a park near our former home. We wanted to "reserve" a good spot there ... typical german - we know ;-)

 

After unpacking and arranging everything our friends got a starter of trammezzini and delicious hotdog bun sandwiches. The dough for the buns we already prepared in the early morning, baked and filled them with yummy stuff. How easy it is to bake such cute homemade buns you will see in our recipe.

 

And what should never be missing on a summerly picnic? Some bottles of wine. Due to Gallo Family Vineyards' event "California meets Balconia" we were invited to select 4 different summer wines and had the possibility to try them together with our friends.

Hamburger Brioche Buns_Rezept_Backen_BBQ

You get around 16 Buns of these ingredients:

500 ml handwarm milk

84 g fresh yeast

45 g smooth butter

2 tbsp raw cane sugar

2 tsp salt

1 kg all purpose flour

2 eggs

 

and additionally:

1 egg

2 tbsp water

2 tbsp milk



  • dissolve the yeast, butter, sugar and salt with milk in a big bowl
  • add flour and eggs and knead for 10 minutes until dough is smooth
  • let the dough rise for 60 minutes at a warm place covered by a kitchen towel
  • devide into 16 pieces
  • set 1 piece with the hollow palm to lightly floured surface and roll the dough, by circular movements to a ball 
  • roll each ball to a rectangle and roll it strong from the longer side
  • bottom both endings and form the buns a little bit
  • with a little space between, place the rolls to a baking tray lined with baking parchment
  • preheat oven to 190°C
  • in a glass mix 1 egg with water and milk and spread the surface of the buns
  • bake for approx. 15 minutes
  • cool them down on a cake rack

Now you can start to prepare your hotdogs ...! Or use the fluffy buns for some delicious sandwiches. That is what we've done and everybody loved them.

Hamburger Brioche Buns_Rezept_Backen_BBQ

We're always happy to discover some new summer wines, because usually we like deep and strong spanish wine. But if it's really hot outside we like to have a chilled and lively wine. That should be no problem for a californian wine but it's really hard to find really good wine of that kind because most of the time it is just super sweet.

 

We picked the Chardonnay, the Pinot Grigio, the White Zinfandel and the Summer Red and we have to give special credits for the White Zinfandel. On summer days we really love to drink rosé wine and this one is like a fruity taste explosion. Just like a summer wine has to be but with the necessary character to stand out ... just perfect!

 

The Summer Red, which you have to drink cold, was a real surprise for us. For a red one it was surprisingly fruity, a little bit like sangria, but definitely not that sweet and without the potential for headaches the next morning. Both white wines were also really good but the White Zinfandel was empty first, because everyone loved this amazing wine.
